April 2016 witnessed the release of a much-anticipated new document, ‘Amoris Laetitia’ (meaning Joy of Love) from the Vatican in which Pope Francis, the current Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, stated his desire for the Catholic Church to be an inclusive institution. He encouraged priests to be more welcoming toward single parents, divorced couples, and gay people – groups which had been shunned by the 2,000-year-old Church. In the document, known as an apostolic exhortation, Pope Francis while rejecting the notion of same sex marriage outright, welcomed divorced and remarried couples stating that they should not be judged, discriminated against, or excluded from Church life. He also encouraged priests to be kind while considering whether such Catholics could receive Holy Communion ...
